Washed Ashore – Art to Save the Sea at South Coast Botanical Gardens (SCBG)(PVE)

The following blurb is what you will find on the SCBG website:

“Trash is making a splash in the Garden this spring. Come see beautiful sculptures made of “trashy” finds, explore our “trashy” past, and learn how we can all be a little less “trashy” with the Garden’s latest exhibit, Washed Ashore – Art to Save the Sea. Sixteen giant creatures made from beach debris have washed ashore and landed at the Garden through September.”

I spent last Sunday afternoon at the SCBG with my dog Jilly.  (Last Sundays of the month are “Dog Walking Days” where your dog is allowed into the Gardens.  (Visit Canine & Owner Policies and Code of Conduct:  https://southcoastbotanicgarden.org/dog-walking-hours/

Anyway, my point is …. If you visit the Gardens, this “art” pretty and at the same time left me a bit sad (as all these sea creatures were created from trash washed onto our shores) and reminds us of just how much “garbage” the human race is polluting our seas.

What is “Washed Ashore – Art to Save the Sea” is a non-profit organization committed to combating plastic pollution through art and education. These 16 sculptures, which consist primarily of sea creatures, were built by the organization and its volunteers to inspire and spark positive changes in consumer habits.  The Garden, having been built atop a sanitary landfill, has been proof throughout the past 60-plus years that beautiful things can come from trashy pasts. With this exhibit, we further explore the concept, as well as the education behind what we can ALL do to limit waste, particularly our single-plastic use.

So, grab your leash and your favorite walking buddy and head to the Gardens for the next Dog Walk!  Sunday, May, 28, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Make your online reservation and please make sure your dog remains on his/her leash through your entire visit.

Enjoy and you just may see me and my Jillian!

History of the Gardens:

Unique from the start, South Coast Botanic Garden is one of the world’s first botanical gardens to be developed over a sanitary landfill. The Garden is a masterpiece of creative land reclamation and environment improvement for all to share. It is a living testimonial to the fact that land reclamation not only offers a practical solution to refuse disposal problems, but also beautifies and improves land values at the same time. The Garden has become a beautiful and restorative urban oasis among the hustle and bustle of a major mega-metropolitan area. It’s amazing to think that at one point in time the South Coast Botanic Garden was covered by the Pacific Ocean. … . for more info, go to their website:  :  https://southcoastbotanicgarden.org
