What is Meditation?

First, there is a lot of confusion about meditation and how you do it.

There are different belief systems and definitions of meditation circulating out there:

  • Mediation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state
  • Meditation means sitting down and doing nothing

My definition:  to relax my mind by

  • sit or lay down in a quiet/peaceful place
  • maybe with music in background
  • listen to a guided meditation tape that helps me to relax my mind
  • deep breathing exercises to relieve stress
  • repeat a mantra
  • or, whatever works in the moment

In other words, there are many different systems, meditation programs, styles of meditations.  All have different but similar approaches – all want you to reach the same goal:  relaxation, peace, mindfulness, awareness.  What approach you take is up to you.

What is the Best Meditation Practice?

Each individual is different and there is no right or wrong way to meditate.  Your goal is to create for yourself a meditation practice that helps you create balance between your external and internal experience.  And, by meditating regularly, you will be able to expand your awareness and be more present in the moment to whatever is happening in your lives.

So, what do the all forms of meditations have in common?  Focus and intention.

Why Meditate With Your Dog

Dogs are natural mediators.  Take a minute to look at your dog.  What is s/he doing right now?  Are they lying on the floor, awake, eyes open?  Do they look totally relaxed?

For me, my choice of meditation is Reiki Energy Healing.   Reiki is the perfect form of meditation with your dog because dogs are highly sensitive to energy, and your dog (or cat) will respond intuitively to Reiki’s energy power to support the healing of emotional, behavior and physical illness and injuries.

And, meditating with your dog can actually help you “let go” during meditation.  Your hand on your dog and your dog lying next to you or in your lap can serve to ground you.  You focus your breathing to your dog’s breathing, and this connection can help to:

  1. Strengthen the bond between you and your dog
  2. Build trust
  3. Help reduce your stress
  4. Help to calm your dog
  5. Assist in your and your dog’s overall heal and well-being
Can I Play Music While Meditating with My Dog?

Music can help calm and soothe anxious dogs.  A study was done by the Scottish SPCA at the University of Glasgow and the results showed that canine stress levels reduced significantly when classical music was played.
